A Critical Analysis of Modi’s Policies
A Critical Analysis of Modi’s
Policies
A close relative recently asked
me, "Why do you hate Modi Ji?" This question, posed with a reverence
that painted Modi as a divine savior of India, prompted me to delve into the
reasons behind my critical stance. This relative, residing in a remote area
where biased media dominates the narrative, is unaware that Modi's policies
benefit the wealthy at the expense of the common people. Today, let's examine
the Goods and Services Tax (GST) policy to illustrate this point.
The GST Policy: Who Truly
Benefits?
Consider the GST rates for
various products:
- Cement: 28%
- Insurance: 18%
- Smartphones: 18%
- Two-Wheelers: 28%
- Air Conditioners: 28%
- Gold: 3%
- Polished Diamonds: 1.5%
Necessities like school supplies,
food, and medicines bear higher GST rates compared to luxury items such as gold
and diamonds. Moreover, bulk purchases of food items are exempt from GST,
favoring those who can afford to buy in large quantities. This tax structure favors
the wealthy, placing a disproportionate burden on the common people.
The Global Context: A Tale of Two Tax
Systems
In most advanced democracies, the
tax system is designed to impose the heaviest burden on those who can afford
it, while essential goods are often tax-exempt to alleviate financial strain on
the poor. Under Modi's administration, however, the GST system targets the less
affluent, discouraging them from purchasing necessary goods. This approach
starkly contrasts with global practices aimed at social equity.
The Power Play: Wealth and
Influence
The concentration of wealth in
the hands of a few businessmen from Gujarat is another pressing issue. Recent
developments in Uttar Pradesh reveal that the Yogi government has begun
blacklisting companies from Gujarat, reflecting growing discontent with Modi’s
policies. In Ayodhya, voters ousted the BJP due to the adverse impact of these
policies, despite the construction of the Ram Temple. This shift in voter
sentiment underscores a broader awakening to the realities of Modi's
governance.
Modi’s Leadership: A Compromised Position?
Contrary to the notion that I
hate Modi, my critique is rooted in the belief that he is compromised and unfit
to lead a nation of over 1.4 billion people. Allegations of his involvement in
the Gujarat riots as Chief Minister suggest that he is beholden to powerful
interests that manipulate him for their benefit. This manipulation is evident
in the rise of Yogi’s power and the subsequent discomfort of Modi and Shah.
Media Manipulation: The
Godi Media Effect
The pervasive influence of biased
media (often termed "Godi Media") plays a significant role in shaping
public perception. This media, controlled by powerful businessmen like Ambani
and Adani, shields the public from the adverse effects of government policies.
The exponential growth in their wealth under Modi's regime raises questions
about their vested interests in maintaining the status quo.
A Call to Action: Reviving
the Spirit of Resistance
Reflecting on historical figures
like Lala Lajpat Rai, who stood against oppressive taxes imposed by the
British, the people of India must protest harmful government policies. The
reluctance to challenge Modi’s policies can be attributed to the media's
failure to provide accurate information. Education and access to truthful
information are crucial for making informed decisions.
I urge my family and friends to
wake up and demand answers from the government. Only through informed and
active engagement can we decide which side of history we want to be on.
