The Power and The Powerful

The Power And The Powerful
On June 4th, Indian democracy
will face a critical test. Those familiar with the power dynamics and the
government's influence over various institutions fear the outcome has already
been manipulated. The current administration has exerted immense pressure on
the system, compelling departments like the courts, bureaucracy, law
enforcement, and media to align with their agenda. Despite this, the opposition
forces appear resolute and equipped to prevent any subversion of the people's
will as captured in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The exit polls, often perceived
as biased and unreliable, have once again stirred apprehension. Historically,
these polls have frequently missed the mark, yet they still influence public
perception. This election saw a voter turnout of 62.3%, and I estimate that
less than 33% of these voters supported the BJP, with the rest opting for other
parties.
Wherever the INDIA bloc fielded
strong candidates, those candidates are likely to win, garnering over 50% of
the votes in their constituencies. This projection is grounded in a scientific
analysis of voter behavior. For instance, assuming an equal split between male
and female voters, if 60% of both groups favored the INDIA bloc, this
translates to 30% of the total votes. Among the remaining voters, categories
such as young unemployed individuals, farmers, Muslims, and OBCs will further
influence the outcome.
Food security has been a critical
issue, potentially swaying some voters toward the BJP unless they believe that
Congress can provide better solutions. Congress's strong manifesto might indeed
appeal to many, possibly tipping the balance in favor of the INDIA bloc.
Historically, voters' lives have been impacted significantly by the ruling
party, which may drive them to seek change.
India's political landscape is
fraught with uncontrollable forces that attempt to sway voters from one party
to another through coercion. Despite witnessing numerous such tactics, my
optimism remains unshaken. I firmly believe that the INDIA bloc will emerge
victorious, no matter how much the current regime attempts to manipulate the
results. The resilience of the opposition and the collective will of the people
are poised to uphold the true essence of democracy in this pivotal election.
The press conference of the INDIA
bloc yesterday declaring with confidence that the INDIA bloc is winning at
least 295 seats aligns with many other observers. My prediction is this number
will be around 323 for the INDIA bloc based on careful analysis of each state.
My handicap is that I do not have on-the-ground information and rely upon the
events that are taking place as the votes are getting counted. The nervousness
that the current government has shown before and after the voting clearly tells
us that the internal survey of the BJP is showing them losing this election.
Otherwise, there never was a need to pass so many ordinances to change the EC
rules, push the CJI out of the selection committee of the EC, arrest two
popular CMs before the voting, freeze accounts of the opposition party, and the
list goes on. But the voters, no matter how uneducated they may be perceived,
do understand corruption. For the rich and the powerful, this government seems
to be doing just fine, and they are the ones cooking up these exit polls for
the Godi media.
The next few days will be crucial
for Indian democracy. The people have voted, and now the integrity of the
system and the determination of the opposition will be put to the test. If the
INDIA bloc's predictions hold, we may witness a significant shift in the
political landscape. However, the ruling party's efforts to maintain power
through any means necessary could lead to unprecedented challenges. As we await
the results, the resilience of Indian democracy and the will of the people
stand as the ultimate arbiters of the nation's future.
