Governor Ravi’s History 101: How Europe Invented Indian Secularism (Spoiler Alert: They Didn’t)

Need History Lessons, Anyone?

The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Mr. R.N. Ravi, recently enlightened us with his groundbreaking revelation that secularism is purely a European concept and has absolutely nothing to do with India. Bravo, Governor! You’ve managed to rewrite thousands of years of history in one swift statement. Sure, the word “secularism” is in English, but the idea? That’s as Indian as it gets. Perhaps a little refresher on the Rig Veda might help Mr. Ravi—where the concept of God was left to individual interpretation, allowing people to worship however and whoever they wanted. This gave birth to religions like Buddhism, Jainism, Sanatan Dharma, and countless others that coexisted without throwing a tantrum over each other's beliefs.

But hey, maybe the Governor’s historical insight comes from some alternate universe where Europe was the cradle of secularism, while in reality, their bloody religious wars would make Game of Thrones look like a picnic. It took them centuries—and perhaps a few visits to more tolerant lands—to figure out that peaceful coexistence was a good idea.

So, let’s set the record straight: secularism is deeply embedded in India’s DNA, long before Europe even grasped the concept. But then again, what more can we expect from yet another Modi-appointed official who seems more committed to toeing the party line than actually understanding the country's heritage? History lessons, anyone?
