How does blind faith spread? Simple: take a pinch of fact, stir in a heap of imagination, sprinkle it with divine authority, and serve it hot to an audience told never to question. The recipe works everywhere in India, America, Europe, and the Middle East. Blind faith is humanity’s longest-running franchise.

Take the Indian village priest. He begins with the truth: Corona killed thousands. Everyone nods because everyone knows someone who died. Then, with the linguistic genius of a WhatsApp uncle, he splits Corona into Coro Na (“don’t do” in Hindi). Don’t do what? Don’t ignore God’s work. And voilà, a deadly virus becomes a divine WhatsApp forward.

Once the mind can’t immediately disprove it, it settles in. Soon, villagers repeat it like scripture. That’s how superstition spreads: not because it makes sense, but because it’s convenient.

And this isn’t confined to rural India. I once confronted a temple speaker, a man with a Ph.D. in biosciences who thundered that childbirth was a crime, because a soul spends nine months in “hell” inside the womb. Yes, a scientist declaring pregnancy a felony. When I challenged him, others joined me. A rare day when reason briefly defeated rhetoric.

But here’s the point: blind faith is global. The West is no better. Millions still cling to the idea that the Earth is flat, despite centuries of science and every satellite photo from space. Anti-vaxxers scream about microchips in vaccines, while happily scrolling Facebook on smartphones that track their every move in real time. The hypocrisy is so thick, you could bottle it and sell it as “holy oil.” And televangelists? They turn superstition into a billion-dollar business, promising “miracle cures” for cancer while flying private jets bought with donation money.

And religion gave us its own classics: Adam and Eve, a story where a talking snake with better PR than any politician convinces a woman to eat fruit, cursing humanity forever. Billions still take that myth as history. Compared to this, our Coro Na priest sounds like an amateur.

The other is a film scene: a boy storms out of class after the teacher explains the Earth revolves around the sun. He insists it rests on a snake’s head because that’s what he was taught. He’s not stupid; he’s conditioned. When your environment feeds you lies in the name of faith, logic doesn’t stand a chance.

Link that boy to Modi today, and the similarity is eerie. Modi’s speeches still echo the same mindset: blind faith dressed as wisdom, myth presented as truth. Different stage, same superstition.

Science, when it doesn’t have an answer, calls it an open problem. It admits uncertainty and keeps searching. Blind faith doesn’t bother. It fills the gap instantly: snakes holding up the Earth, wombs as hell, apples as humanity’s downfall, pandemics as “Coro Na,” vaccines as microchips. And people clap.

This isn’t just an Indian issue, or an American one. It’s a human weakness. Across cultures, people prefer fables over facts. And leaders, whether priests, preachers, or prime ministers, love it that way. Because blind faith is the cheapest currency in politics: it sells fast, requires no proof, and guarantees loyalty.

अंधविश्वास कैसे फैलता है? नुस्ख़ा बहुत आसान है: थोड़ी-सी सच्चाई लीजिए, उसमें कल्पना की ढेर सारी मिलाइए, ऊपर से ईश्वरीय मुहर लगाइए और जनता को परोस दीजिए। सवाल मत पूछो, सिर्फ़ सिर हिलाओ। यही फ़ॉर्मूला भारत से लेकर अमेरिका, यूरोप और मध्य-पूर्व तक हर जगह काम करता है।

भारत के गाँव का पुजारी देख लीजिए। वह लोगों को याद दिलाता है कि कोरोना से हज़ारों मरे। सब मानते हैं, क्योंकि सबने अपने आस-पास किसी को खोया है। लेकिन अगले ही पल, वह भाषाई जादू दिखाता है Corona को तोड़कर Coro Na बना देता है (“मत करो” का मतलब)। और फिर यह जोड़ देता है: “मत करो क्या? भगवान का काम मत छोड़ो।” बस, एक जानलेवा महामारी को ईश्वरीय WhatsApp संदेश में बदल दिया गया।

अब गाँव वाले सोच भी नहीं पाते कि यह कितना बेतुका है, और धीरे-धीरे इसे सच मान लेते हैं। यही अंधविश्वास का बीज है तर्क से नहीं, सुविधा से उगता है।

लेकिन यह केवल भारत तक सीमित नहीं है। मैं ख़ुद 25 साल पहले एक मंदिर में स्पीकर से भिड़ा था यह आदमी बायो-साइंसेज़ में Ph.D. धारक था। उसका उपदेश? “हर इंसान जो बच्चे को जन्म देता है अपराधी है, क्योंकि उसने आत्मा को नौ महीने गर्भ में नर्क में डाला।” जी हाँ, विज्ञान पढ़े-लिखे आदमी का ज्ञान! मैंने चुनौती दी तो और लोग भी खड़े हो गए। एक पल के लिए तर्क ने अंधविश्वास को हरा दिया।

वैसे दुनिया भी कुछ कम नहीं। आदम और हव्वा की कहानी लीजिए। एक बोलने वाला साँप एक औरत को फल खिलाता है और पूरी मानव जाति श्रापित हो जाती है। करोड़ों लोग इसे इतिहास मानते हैं। तुलना कीजिए तो हमारा Coro Na पुजारी भी मासूम लगता है।

आज भी पश्चिम में नज़ारे अलग नहीं हैं। अमेरिका में टेलीवेंजेलिस्ट “चमत्कारी इलाज़” बेचकर प्राइवेट जेट उड़ाते हैं। फ़्लैट-अर्थर्स आज भी मानते हैं कि धरती चपटी है NASA और उपग्रह की हज़ारों तस्वीरें भी उन्हें नहीं हिलातीं। एंटी-वैक्सर्स चीखते हैं कि टीकों में माइक्रोचिप हैं, लेकिन हाथ में रखा स्मार्टफ़ोन जो उनकी हर हरकत ट्रैक करता है, उस पर भरोसा रखते हैं। ढोंग इतना मोटा है कि बोतल में भरकर “पवित्र तेल” बेच सकते हैं।

अब आइए वीडियो पर। पहला वीडियो मोदी ख़ुद मानते हैं कि उन्होंने कभी स्कूलिंग नहीं की।

दूसरा, एक फ़िल्म का सीन मास्टरजी कहते हैं कि धरती सूरज के चारों ओर घूमती है। बच्चा मानने से इंकार करता है और कहता है धरती तो साँप के सिर पर टिकी है। और फिर स्कूल छोड़ देता है। वह मूर्ख नहीं है, बस माहौल ने उसे अंधविश्वास पिलाया है।

उस बच्चे और मोदी को जोड़कर देखिए मंच बदल गया है, पर मानसिकता वही है। आज भी मोदी के भाषणों में वही अंधविश्वास की गूंज सुनाई देती है, तर्क नहीं।

विज्ञान जब किसी सवाल का जवाब नहीं ढूँढ पाता तो उसे open problem कहता है। मानता है कि हमें नहीं पता, और खोज जारी रखता है। लेकिन अंधविश्वास को मेहनत नहीं करनी पड़ती। वह तुरंत जवाब दे देता है: धरती साँप पर टिकी है, गर्भ नर्क है, फल खाने से मानवता श्रापित हो गई, महामारी Coro Na है, और टीका माइक्रोचिप। और लोग ताली बजाते हैं।

अंधविश्वास सिर्फ़ भारतीय समस्या नहीं है। यह मानवता की कमजोरी है। और यही वजह है कि दुनिया भर के नेता चाहे मंदिर में हों, चर्च में, मस्जिद में या संसद में अंधविश्वास को गले लगाते हैं। यह सबसे आसान मुद्रा है: बिकता तुरंत है, सबूत की ज़रूरत नहीं होती, और वफ़ादारी पक्की करता है।
