But if the government puts compromised people in these positions, particularly people with questionable records, they can be left with little choice but to do the deeds of the government. Corruption then becomes a tool that can be effectively used by a corrupt government.

Many people in the judiciary who have been there for years may have questionable records, and once again, they can potentially be controlled by a corrupt government. Those who continue to believe that Congress was a corrupt party should ask themselves a question: Was the party corrupt, or did it have some corrupt members, many of whom later left the party and joined the BJP?

If Congress itself was as corrupt as the BJP has claimed, then by now the BJP government should have been able to prove it. This government sent members of AAP to jail, as well as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, on charges that their opponents have described as politically motivated. If the evidence against Congress was really there, why would the BJP not have come down even harder on Congress, knowing that it wanted to destroy that party?

To hide one lie, people often end up telling more lies. In the same way, to hide corruption, a government may feel that it must stay in power, and therefore it keeps becoming more corrupt. More money gets distributed to buy MPs and MLAs; then money gets used to develop methods to manipulate elections; allegations arise about money being used to influence judges, and the list goes on. These are serious allegations, and they deserve evidence and independent investigation rather than being buried by institutions that are themselves under question.

Those who continue to support the BJP even after seeing these allegations of corruption should understand what is at stake for the nation. If you want to support the BJP on principles, then go back and look at leaders like Mr. Vajpayee and ask whether today's leadership represents those same principles. Demand that allegations against the current leadership be independently investigated. You need to participate in cleaning up the system, not become part of a system you yourself know may be corrupt.

Just imagine what it would mean for the history of India if powerful people, whether Modi, Shah, Gyanesh Kumar, Adani, Ambani, judges, media owners, or anyone else, were independently investigated and, if proven guilty in a court of law, punished for crimes against the nation. No individual should be above the law simply because of his position, money, political power, or connections.

That is the Ravan India needs to bury today: not one person, but a system in which political power, money, investigative agencies, sections of the media, and even the judiciary can potentially protect one another. Add every guilty face to that Ravan, whether it comes from politics, Godi Media, business, bureaucracy, or the judiciary, and make accountability so strong that these crimes are not repeated for another 100 years or perhaps ever again.
