On September 19, Rahul Gandhi held a rally in Indore to raise issues facing students and expose this government's failures. Rahul has figured out that the best way to undermine Modi is to humiliate him in public, the very technique the BJP used through its IT Cell by branding Rahul a “Pappu.” Rahul, on the other hand, is questioning what makes Modi qualified for the position of Prime Minister while accusing his government of robbing India and Indians of their wealth and dignity. This is a masterstroke of a technique many political parties use, and Rahul is using it effectively.

Rahul is using Modi’s own way of speaking, his interactions with world leaders, and his statements about his education to question his leadership. Modi makes it sound as though it is perfectly acceptable not to go through the formal schooling system, which makes Rahul’s appeal to students even more effective. The government’s failure to create jobs, prevent examination paper leaks, and address the prominence of politically connected family members in highly visible positions makes it easier for Rahul to connect his message with the masses.

I believe Modi worries that if he loses power, the party that comes to power may not be kind to him or his friends. “As you sow, so shall you reap” is a phrase we all know well, and now karma appears to be standing right in front of Modi, making him sweat. Even BJP supporters seem unable to come up with attacks against the opposition that stick, while the punches the opposition is throwing are landing directly on Modi and Shah.

The horrifying stories of students being told at these rallies are reaching millions through Instagram and other social media platforms. These are not merely political speeches anymore. They are stories of young Indians struggling with paper leaks, unemployment, and a government they believe has failed them. And as these stories spread, more people are connecting the students’ experiences with the questions Rahul Gandhi is raising about Modi’s leadership.
